First time Finland has been displaced from the top spot and it's displaced by not one but 5 countries. Well done, teachers!

We are book smart. I hope our students are as good at solving real life problems.

Elizabeth Hoi Yan Yong

Book smarts are needed to solve everyday problems, too. Burger King's third-pounder burger campaign flopped spectacularly because most Americans thought a third of a pound is less than a quarter of a pound. 😜

Finland has decided long ago to put less emphasis on some subjects (maths is one of these) and international ranking that matter so much to us, to free up their teachers, students, systems to refocus on group problem solving skills, communication, soft skills, physical+emotional+social+moral developments and health of children and critical thinking to the usages (and not just the usages) of modern technologies...etc things that contribute not to the Ranking but long term usefulness of every citizen, as individual and corporate and their capacity to solve Real life problems. I am Not saying this to neglect the hard works from the teachers from those countries that rank top (I acknowledge it is an extra ordinary effort and the nation should still be proud of the achievement rationally), but let's not fool ourselves by only looking at things that contribute to the ranking. Is life a 100m dash? Or a marathon or ironman race with multiple sports over long distance (that winning the 1.5km Swimming doesn't lead to completing the whole race)? You choose.

Take it easy on such ranking, must remember the real world: tangible inventions, Nobel prize winners, Asians have ways to go Be humble I like Elaine Eo's point :-)

This ranking came with a price, especially at the expense of our children. The border-lined need to attend remedial while the elite are scheduled for enrichment class. Tuition became a necessity for most students. Try ranking who the most happy pupils. We may not be that proud afterall

It's better to work hard as a child than to do hard work as an adult.

Tan Eng Hor may want to look at PISA Report which have indicators like Are You Happy in School ... You might be surprised. Actually, a lot of data on representative sample is available to answer questions raised here.

Our students are receiving good education here, and they are learning well. They are indeed positive towards the exams in the early years until they feel the exam pressure and start losing their confidence. Why must we set very hard exam questions? We should not have unreasonable high expectation on them. These are obstacles of learning.

I think we should also recognize that the corollary is true - that when we have high standards and our children exceeds them, it builds their confidence because they can see that they CAN surpass their own expectations for themselves. I think we can do a better job of expectations management and help our children recognize that their results, when they have applied themselves to the best of their ability, is a GREAT result. I also think we shouldn't shy away from examinations outside of Singapore, especially if we believe that Singapore exams are unreasonably difficult. Take the UNSW so your children have a better idea of where they stand against other primary school students and the SAT I/IIs to see where they stand against other secondary students. I would think Singapore students ought to shine there!

I don't think this is good at all. I totally agree with this chap in the article that Singapore needs to get its ass off its self congratulating high chair. But a leading UK head teacher, Sir Anthony Seldon, criticised such league tables as "arguably doing more harm than good". "They are skewing schools and national education systems away from real learning towards repetitive rote learning,"

I'm actually seeing very little self-congratulating going on in Singapore - but quite a backlash in overseas forums, especially from non-Asians. Singapore has hardly been one to rest on its laurels. I really do hope our teachers get some recognition here.

On the other hand, our children need to be trained for their good life skills incl communication skill. Sorry to say some top scorers were not able to express themselves very well during admission interviews. Subsequently, be prepared to receive love letters from parents saying their kids were not taught what will be asked, what to bring so and so .... errrrgggg ... it's an interview!

2 papayas are bought for every durian bought. If we let this combination be 1unit, Cost of 1unit=2x$2+$7 =$11. Number of units=$77/$11 =7 Number of papayas=7x2 =14
